Adhyay 1 - The Absolute Truth

Shrimad Bhagavat Mahapuran

जन्माद्यस्य यतोऽन्वयादितरतश्चार्थेष्वभिज्ञ: स्वराट्

तेने ब्रह्म हृदा य आदिकवये मुह्यन्ति यत्सूरय: ।

तेजोवारिमृदां यथा विनिमयो यत्र त्रिसर्गोऽमृषा

धाम्ना स्वेन सदा निरस्तकुहकं सत्यं परं धीमहि ॥

We meditate upon the Absolute Truth (Satyam Param), who is the source of all. The Bhagavat Mahapuran starts with this deep meditation.

In the holy forest of Naimisharanya, 88,000 sages led by Saunaka Rishi gathered to perform a massive yajna for the welfare of the world in the age of Kali. They were deeply worried about the spiritual decline of humanity. They approached the great scholar Suta Goswami, who had heard the Bhagavatam from Sukadeva Goswami.

The sages asked six profound questions: What is the ultimate good? What is the essence of all scriptures? Why did the Lord appear? What are His various incarnations? Where has Dharma taken shelter after Krishna's departure? Suta Goswami, overwhelmed with devotion, begins the narration of the most sacred of all Puranas.
