Daksha Prajapati organized a grand sacrifice (Yajna) but intentionally did not invite Shiva and Sati. Despite Shiva's warnings, Sati went to the yajna, hoping her father would realize his mistake. Instead, Daksha insulted Shiva in front of all the guests.

Unable to bear the insult to her husband, Sati invoked her yogic fire and gave up her life (Agni-Samadhi). This news reached Shiva, who was deep in meditation. His grief and anger knew no bounds. He tore a lock of His hair and struck it on the ground, creating the terrifying Veerabhadra.
